Salted Herring - A Russian Favorite!

If you ask any Russian, herring is one of the most loved and traditional items that is served at any party. If you love herring, then this is the dish for you. Although there is very little to "prepare" here is a quick recipe on how to serve it to your guests. Your best bet is to purchase your herring at a Russian store or a World Market.

Ingredients

  • 1 jar Herring in oil (available at a Russian store or a World Market)
  • 2 tbsp vinegar or any dry red or white wine
  • 3 boiled potatoes
  • 2 small onions

Preparation

Remove the herring from the jar and arrange on a plate or platter. Arrange onion rings on top of the herring. Drizzle wine on top of the herring and onions. If you do not have wine, you can try some vinegar or even lemon juice.

Serve with boiled potatoes or Russian bread (dark is preferable).

Presentation

Traditionally, this dish goes great after a shot of vodka! However, it's delicious with any beverage.
